For some people, carrying a pocket knife is more like a habit rather than a crucial need because we are not going to be faced with extreme conditions in which a small knife will be very necessary everyday. However, having one will cut lots of effort especially when you need to cut something for it is the main purpose. Choosing a Pocket Knife
When buying a pocket knife, not all people will consider the same factors because in some cases we may want to go with whatever seems fitting our taste but, knowing at least a little bit about what you will be using the knife for and what the product will offer can make the shopping even more effective. A knife’s most important point will be the blade as it is the one that cuts and utilizes. Blade quality varies depending on the material and how the edge is shaped.
High-quality steel is expensive and they can have certain characteristics such as able to retain the edge or easy to sharpen and robust. Cheaper steel may dull faster or in some models like Gerber EAB Vs EAB Lite are non-reusable after a certain time and usage. The edge can be plain straight or serrated on some models to match with every application. Another important part is their handle and folding system because most pocket knives are foldable.
This mechanism makes the knife compact enough to be kept in your jeans pocket or purse but also safe when not being used. Some people prefer assisted but the majority seems to like the non-assisted system but then again, it all depends on personal taste for it little affects the blade quality or the knife reliability. We usually pay attention to their ergonomics and how the handle feels on our hand when using the tool whether it is comfortable or needs some time to get used to.
About Spyderco Tenacious and Para 2
Choosing the pocket knife can be as fast or as complicated as you want it to be but, all of them will mostly do the same purpose. Performance will vary among products as they may have different materials and overall design but to save time, you can go either by deciding a budget range first or deciding the brand option. We often stick with popular names as they tend to be more reliable and in most cases offer good quality products.
When talking about pocket knives, there are probably few brands that come to mind but among those, Spyderco will be one of the best choices to shop from. They are not the number one option for best quality steel but they do carry lots of useful, EDC knives without the hefty price tags and this is one of the reasons why we like this brand. Depending on your preference and budget, we can choose any knives from the collection to fit with the activity.
For those who prefer to carry pocket knives that are not only reliable for little jobs but also easy enough to pass the law and allow you to open carry it, Spyderco Tenacious and Para 2 will be such a great choice to consider. These knives are identical to each other with so many different external qualities but the price gap suggests that they are not the same knives that you can interchangeably pick just because they look the same.
The Para 2 or Paramilitary 2 is placed higher into the price spectrum with a $100 price gap, making the latter seem more promising when you are aiming for better quality. Tenacious itself is a very popular EDC and fits many people’s taste as it is cheap and useful for different little jobs. Performance wise the blades are sharp but what seems to put them apart the most in this case is the metal being used. Overall, there is no bad option and chances are, you will be satisfied with either of them.
Spyderco Tenacious and Para 2 Design
In a glance, Spyderco Tenacious and Para 2 are very identical and they do have the same design side by side but when you pay attention closely, the blade of Tenacious is actually wider compared to how Para 2 is shaped. They do however, in general are built around the same idea and side by side they do looking like the same knife. When in folded form, the latter is a little bit taller at 8.2-inch compared to 7.7-inch.
They also have slightly different handle design which may affect how the knife will feel while being used. As for the fashion options, both of them are available in plain blade variant only but the Para 2 not just offering silver and black blade but also give you the options to choose different handle fashion such as the camo handle or the left-hand version to make sure both right and left hand people will get the optimum comfort.
Spyderco Tenacious and Para 2 Blade
As it has been mentioned above, the first factor you may want to consider when choosing a knife is their blade and here what sets Spyderco Tenacious and Para 2 apart the most. The cheaper Tenacious is made with 8Cr13MoV steel while the latter uses CPM S30V steel which makes the price between the two as this one is also more expensive to purchase. You will see many budget knives using similar stainless steel as Tenacious as it is decent and reliable both good at retaining edge and easy to sharpen
With the Para 2, this CPM S30V steel is seen as a better material for a blade and this is also carrying a quality in which the former doesn’t have which is corrosion resistant. The stainless steel is developed by Dick Barber of Crucible Industries and it is a martensitic or hardened and powder-made material. It has overall better edge resistance compared to 8Cr13MoV so you may find using the blade longer before needing to sharpen it again. Another difference is that the Tenacious has a slightly longer cutting edge than Para 2.
Spyderco Tenacious and Para 2 Performance
The next part we want to talk about is their performance and here, you will love either Spyderco Tenacious or Para 2 because they do the job very well. What we love is they are sharp right out of the box and they can cut papers easily without any problem but when compared to each other, you will feel the Para 2 slightly gave an impression of smooth movement, it glides easily when cutting while the Tenacious may stuck a little bit at some point but overall both are great.
Spyderco Tenacious and Para 2 Folding System
The last part we want to talk about here is their folding and overall handling performance. Here, we still like Para 2 better because of its longer handle but comfort wise they are very similar. The material to make these handles seems to be the same as well. Spyderco knives have this loop to flick the blade open but you will need more effort to eject Tenacious as it is stiffer in comparison to smoother Para 2 which gives a quick and overall better experience.
What makes the latter much better on this side is actually the compression lock which is like a liner and it allows you to fold the blade safely yet quickly. Just apply pressure in the lock and it will unlock the blade and let it enter the handlebar conveniently but with Tenacious, we have to use both the thumb and index finger which at times can be dangerous as users report the blade cut the back of their thumb.
Spyderco Tenacious vs Para 2
These knives may look very similar but in fact are pretty different. Not only the Para 2 has better steel to make the blade while also being made in the country, this blade is sharper out of the box and retains the edge longer in combination to rust resistance. The Tenacious however, has more compact handle and form when folded as well as slightly longer cutting edge. With the compression lock, Para 2 is safer to use than its brother.
You can pick any of these knives and still be satisfied with the performance but if budget is not a consideration, we do think Spyderco Para 2 will be a better choice as it has a better blade and better folding mechanism.
