Spyderco is known as one of the best knife brands in the market, and their CQI (“constant quality improvement”) philosophy has allowed them to produce better and better knives over time. In the following article, we will discuss the comparisons between Spyderco Dragonfly 2, a result of the so-called CQI process, and Spyderco Byrd Robin 2, which is a compact and lightweight model with a distinctive thumb hole. Dragonfly 2 is a little bit more expensive than Byrd Robin 2, but is it worth the price? Continue reading below for the comparisons between Spyderco Dragonfly 2 vs Byrd Robin 2!
Design and Dimensions
The first thing that you should know about these two knives is that they are both very compact and lightweight, and yet Spyderco Dragonfly 2 is smaller and lighter than Spyderco Byrd Robin 2. The Dragonfly 2 has a total length of 5-7/16 inches, a closed length of 3-7/32 inches, and a weight of barely 1.2 oz.
This knife is incredibly lightweight and portable. It is very easy to conceal, if that is what you need. It is so light and slim that you may sometimes forget that you have the knife in your pocket. Well, see also our previous post about Spyderco Dragonfly 2 vs Manbug here!
On the other hand, the Byrd Robin 2 is slightly bigger and heavier. The total length is 5.8125”, the closed length is 3.3125”, and the weight is about 2.5 oz. As you can see, this knife is also very compact and lightweight, but it is still not as portable and concealable as the Dragonfly 2.
Blade Design and Quality
The blades of both Spyderco Dragonfly 2 and Spyderco Byrd Robin 2 have jimped spines which improve their handling. The blade of Spyderco Dragonfly 2 is slightly shorter at 2-5/16 inches. It features a circular thumb hole, which is very fast and efficient.
Spyderco Dragonfly 2’s blade is made by the more experienced makers in Seki, Japan, so you can expect the quality to be better. Besides, the blade is indeed made of a more durable material. It is made of the VG-10 steel. This steel is a little difficult to sharpen – you need some special tools to do the job yourself – but the sharpness, edge retention, and strength are exceptional.
On the other hand, Spyderco Byrd Robin 2’s blade is made in China. It is made of the 8Cr13MoV stainless steel. This material is very good in terms of value per price. It is quite cheap to make, and it is easy to sharpen. However, it is prone to rust and stains, and it is not as tough as the VG-10 steel.
Finally, the difference between Spyderco Dragonfly 2 vs Byrd Robin 2 comes down to the handle. Spyderco Dragonfly 2 comes with fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) handle scales, which are lightweight yet solid and durable. The handle scales are textured to enhance the handling. On the other hand, Spyderco Byrd Robin 2 comes with G10 handle scales, which feel nice and comfortable.
