SOG Escape Review: Good Utility Knife

Although SOG is primarily known for their reproduction of the SOG knife from the Vietnam War era, the company has actually produced a wide variety of knives and tools for EDC purposes. If you are looking for an affordable yet reliable folding knife suitable for various everyday carry tasks, SOG Escape may be the answer that you’ve been looking for. In the SOG Escape review below, we will see the qualities that make this knife awesome, along with its few weaknesses.

Size and Weight
As a general-purpose everyday carry (EDC) knife, SOG Escape comes with the perfect size. It is neither too small nor too big. The total length is 8.2 inches with a blade length of 3.4 inches. It provides just enough cutting edge to take care of various tasks, without being too large or too bulky. You can handle it easily and confidently in tight quarters. It is also slim and short enough to be pocketed comfortably. For a specialized combat knife, see our previous post about SOG Aegis Review here!

Meanwhile, the weight is only 4.8 oz, so you will not find much of a problem when carrying it. Well, if you are looking for the slimmest and the most lightweight folding knife, SOG Escape is certainly not the most suitable choice. However, if you prefer a balanced design with good portability, usability, and versatility, SOG Escape is great. Getting the right dimensions can be tricky for an EDC knife, but SOG Escape has managed to solve the challenge.

Design and Features
SOG Escape is a good-looking knife. It looks very cool and stylish. The ridged sides of the handle create an aggressive look. The unique Groove slot at the end of the handle further enhances the appearance. Meanwhile, the blade also looks great with the spear-point shape and partially serrated edge. SOG Escape makes another positive check if you are looking for a good-looking knife.

Nevertheless, SOG Escape is not only about its appearance. The knife is also packed with nice features that greatly enhance its usability and versatility. We have mentioned about the Groove slot near the rear end of the handle. The Groove slot actually holds a line cutter which you can use for cutting strings, cords, seat belts, or straps without opening the blade. This is a truly great feature which can also preserve the sharpness and durability of the blade. Don’t worry, the line cutter will not get in the way of your hand as you handle the knife.

SOG Escape also comes with a glass breaker, a wire stripper, extra cutter blades under the handle slab, and a pocket clip. However, the pocket clip only allows a tip-down carrying position. So, people who prefer a tip-up carrying position may need to have a workaround. In addition, the pocket clip is not very durable. It may break pretty quickly, especially if abused.

SOG Escape comes with a great blade design. It has a blade thickness of 0.13 inches, which is pretty good to provide strength and durability. However, this is a spear-point blade with a partially serrated edge. It is highly versatile, suitable for various tasks. However, it is not very good for slicing due to the limited plain edge. That is not a problem if slicing is not your primary use, and you can benefit from the versatility.

The serrated edge is great for cutting ropes, straps, and solid sticks. Meanwhile, the spear-point end offers great power for stabbing, penetration, and prying. Still, make sure that you do not over-abuse this knife because the blade is not exactly the toughest blade in the market.

SOG Escape’s blade is made of the 9Cr18MoV stainless steel. It offers good sharpness and durability. It is relatively easy to sharpen. It doesn’t break easily, but it is somewhat easy to bend. Note that the edge retention is not really great, so it requires frequent sharpening to stay ready-for-use all the time. The material doesn’t have very good resistance against moisture, so make sure to clean and dry it after use.

SOG Escape’s handle design is solid and comfortable. The handle is made of the lightweight anodized aluminum 6061-T6 with a polycarbonate cover. It has ridged sides to enhance the handling. It fits very well in the grip. The aluminum handle offers great strength and sturdiness, but such metallic materials often become too hot or too cold to be touched due to the temperatures of the environment. That’s why the polycarbonate cover is awesome. The cover helps to maintain the handle in a tolerable temperature range.

Lock and Opening
This knife is equipped with a lock back system that is solid and durable. It does not have an assisted opening. Instead, it features ambidextrous thumbstuds for manual opening. One may need some time to get used to the thumbstuds. However, once you get the hold of it, SOG Escape can be quite fast and efficient.

Some people say that SOG Escape may arrive with loose screws. Because of this, it is important to inspect the knife after you open the packaging. Tightening a few screws should be easy.
